VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

I am in search of dedicated coaches who are willing to put in the time and commitment it will take to get our kids back to nationals. There are 23 events, so I am looking for 23 different coaches! Science Olympiad is a combination of all grade levels, ages, areas of expertise, and students willing to work hard and who have a passion for building, writing, testing, and competing against others. There will be certain criteria the students will need to fulfill and will need to make it on to a team in the fall to be able to compete.

This year our Junior Varsity team will be made up of 18 students, and the Varsity team will only be made up of 15 students. Students will only be permitted to participate in three events so they can focus on becoming experts in those three events. If we have enough interest from students, we will have a third team which will be made of an additional 18 junior varsity students.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
Students will be required to practice at least two times per week depending on the events they are involved in. There will be Saturday practices that all students will need to attend and with our school time change before school practices will become more common as well. Students will need to maintain their academic grades, good behavior, and be highly recommended from their teachers. Poor attendance, poor commitment, poor grades and misbehavior will not be accepted. Students will have to join up to three events to participate in of their choice! There are potentially three competitions the students will participate in: Regional competition at UNCC, the State competition at NC State, and the National competition in Dayton, Ohio!! Students should only try out if they can attend all three of these competitions and who can attend all practices and meetings. Practice is mandatory from the beginning! Also, due to many conflicts with students' schedules and other extra curricular activities, students who make the Science Olympiad team will NOT be permitted to try out for NAL or be a part of NAL. If any student wants to participate in other Piedmont extracurricular activities, they MUST obtain prior approval from the head coach BEFORE trying out for the team!

Science Olympiad is most importantly a fun way to learn about different science concepts and to display knowledge that is not normally learned inside a regular classroom. My hope for our team again this year is that we can all work together, become a close family, and succeed beyond what we all thought was possible! Due to the Bell's expecting their first baby at Christmas, Mr. Clark will be working as a co-head coach and taking over in Mrs. Bell's absence from December to March.

WHAT TO DO NEXT:
In the mean time while school is just getting started, please listen to announcements, come back and visit this website, sign up to participate at open house and at back to school night, and tell all your friends to try-out! Please visit this website www.sciencenc.com to start looking at the 23 different events to become familiar with them and to get an idea of what you would like to try-out for! Also, we need coaches who are willing to work hard and spend time with middle schoolers! Please pass the word!

THERE IS A MANDATORY MEETING FOR ALL STUDENTS/PARENTS WHO MADE THE FIRST ROUND OF CUTS ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 11TH AT 7:45AM.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Bell :)
